Understanding Structural Support

Safety Standards for Your Dream Countertop

Not all materials are created equal. To protect your investment and ensure home safety, Surface Creations follows strict industry guidelines for overhangs:

  • Natural Stone (Granite & Quartzite): Supports are required for any overhang exceeding 10 inches.
  • Quartz & Dekton Surfaces: Supports are required for any overhang exceeding 15 inches.
  • The 20-Inch Safety Rule: For any overhang exceeding 20 inches, a decorative or structural support leg must be integrated into the design. Brackets alone are insufficient for depths of this size.

For a countertop to be stable, at least 2/3 (66%) of the total material width must be supported by the base cabinetry. Brackets act as an extension of that base, moving the “pivot point” outward to prevent tipping or breakage.

Heavy-Duty Steel Supports

Hidden Strength for Seamless Designs

Our flat brackets are crafted from 3/8″ thick heavy-duty steel to provide maximum rigidity without bulky corbels.

  • Available Sizes: 18″ and 24″ lengths.
  • Application: Ideal for single-level islands where a “floating” look is desired.

Designed for vertical mounting, our L-Brackets provide superior cantilever strength.

  • Stock Size: 14″ x 8″ x 3″.
  • Application: Perfect for breakfast bars and pony wall transitions.

To keep your project moving, our templators carry a stock of these brackets in their vehicles. If your design requires support, we can provide the hardware immediately on-site to avoid project delays.

Installation Specifications

Guidelines for Contractors and Installers

Surface Creations of Vermont provides structural steel hardware for purchase; however, we do not perform the installation of these supports. Because the structural integrity of a home’s cabinetry or wall studs is unique to every project, a qualified contractor must perform the installation to ensure all brackets are securely anchored to the building’s substructure.

  1. Notching: The contractor must route a 3/8″ deep notch into the top of the cabinet frame.
  2. Flush Mount: The bracket must sit perfectly flush with the top of the wood to prevent stress points on the stone.
  3. Fastening: Secure the bracket using heavy-duty wood screws through the pre-drilled holes.
  1. Framing: L-brackets should be bolted directly to the vertical wood studs.
  2. Drywall: For a completely hidden look, brackets should be installed before the final wall finish is applied.

Choosing to proceed with an installation that exceeds NSI or Surface Creations safety guidelines without proper support requires a signed No Support Waiver. This document confirms that the homeowner understands the risks of breakage or failure and releases Surface Creations from liability.
